Thirteen diverse organizations came together in the spring of 2003 with the goals of promoting cultural awareness, Greek unity and to grow stronger on the University campus under the structure of a Greek council.
Representatives
from the thirteen organizations met throughout the spring and summer of
2003 to lay the groundwork for the new council. With the guidance and help
of Geisu Springer, the Multicultural Greek Council was formally established
on March 14th, 2003 with Alpha Psi Lambda, Delta Epsilon Psi,
Delta Phi Omega, Gamma Alpha Omega, Gamma Phi Delta, Kappa Delta Chi, Kappa
Phi Gamma, Lambda Theta Alpha, Omega Delta Phi, Sigma Lambda Beta, Sigma
Lambda Gamma, Sigma Phi Omega and Theta Nu Xi as the founding organizations.
In the fall of 2004, MGC granted associate status to alpha Kappa Delta Phi,
making it the first expansion organization and bringing the total member
count to fourteen.
The purpose of the Multicultural Greek Council is to:
1) To act as a governing body for member organizations as outlined
in the MGC constitution.
2) To promote the appreciation of diversity of culture and ethnic backgrounds.
3) To encourage scholastic achievement among its member organizations.
4) To provide a forum for discussion of general concerns, issues, and topics
that affect member organizations.
5) To coordinate semester activities to ensure adequate cooperation and
harmony among member organizations and other campus organizations.
6) To provide the university and general communities with information
in member organizations.
7) To mediate disputes between member organizations.
8) To act in the best interest of the University of Houston.
The Multicultural Greek Council has participated in several events across
campus in the short period of time it has been in existence. Annual events

their groups as well as MGC through a series of events held at the beginning
of each semester, the Thanksgiving feast with the Hispanic Students Association,
College fair for high school seniors, MGC holiday mixer, and mixers with
U.H. IFC, NPHC, and HCPA. In its very first year of existence, MGC was awarded
“Best New Organization for 2003-2004” at the annual Campus Leaders Reception.
In addition to this, MGC member groups lead the University in awards and
